Introduction and Exploration of HAND BUILDING Clay Taught by Janet Masterson
This class is an introduction and exploration of the methods for Hand Building clay. These include the pinch, coil, and slab methods. We will focus on the basic skills and methods necessary to create finished products in clay.
A variety of surface decoration techniques, including glazing, will be introduced and demonstrated.
• Each student will receive 12.5 lbs. of clay that are included in the fee.
• The use of a class set of clay tools as well as surface embellishment supplies are included in the fee.
• A class set of basic glazes will be available for student use while in class.
• One bisque and glaze firing are included in the fee.
• The student is welcome to make one or as many clay objects as they desire with the 12.5 lbs. of clay during the three 2-hour class times dedicated to construction. Students are welcome to work at home as well, and their projects will be fired if they conform with the requirements to safely fire in the kiln.
• There will be two additional class times for glazing, and a final class for pickup and sharing.

For everyone’s safety and peace of mind, only 5 students can be enrolled in a class at the same time; this enables each student to have a safely distanced work station. The smaller class size makes individualized instruction readily available. The tools and work area provided will be sanitized before and after every class. Hand sanitizer and soap will also be supplied.
Students are encouraged to bring ideas with them to the first class. A visit to Laurel Gallery is a great way to get ideas as well as checking out Pinterest, ceramic sites on the internet, and home decorating venues.
Clay is a messy media so appropriate clothes are encouraged, and a smock or apron is suggested.

Janet Masterson is the instructor. She is a 30-year teaching veteran and a retired Henrico County Art teacher. She loves teaching all medias but admits to a passion for clay construction. She is one of Laurel Gallery’s in-house potters, and her work is happily displayed and sold at the shop. She looks forward to having you in class!
